Bassett scores late penalty to seal 2-1 win

Northern Ireland finished their qualifying campaign for the UEFA Under 19s Championships with a 2-1 win against Cyprus.

Caitlyn Hamilton and Rebecca Bassett scored the goals to seal the win after Cyprus defender Chryso Michael gave them the lead.

It was a welcome win for Alfie Wylie's side after they lost their opening two games in the three game tournament to Portugal and Norway.

Northern Ireland started the brighter with Bassett coming close on two occasions just after the 10 minute mark. Strike partner Morganne Beggs then had a chance of her own but again she was denied.

Then with half an hour gone and against the run of play, keeper Beth Hopwood was beaten by Michael's free kick to give Cyprus the lead.

The Under 19s continued to press but were unable to make the breakthrough until the 51st minute. Abbie Magee delivered a corner which Hamilton was on the end of to give them a deserved equaliser.

Again it was Northern Ireland going in search of a winner and it arrived in the 87th minute. Rebecca Bassett stepped up form the spot to score and give them a deserved three points.

The win ensured they finished third in the group which won't be good enough to reach the Elite Stages.
