McDaniel hits four as Belfast school dominate last four clash

Mercy College reached this year’s Electric Ireland Senior Schools’ Cup final thanks to a comprehensive win over Strabane’s Holy Cross College.

The girls from north Belfast went behind in the semi-final but then turned on the power to secure a 5-1 win. And Northern Ireland under-19 international Louise McDaniel notched four of their goals.

Holy Cross came flying out of the traps in the match at Mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown.

And it was no real surprise when they grabbed an early lead through a fantastic strike from Ellie-Jay McMenamin.

However, the goal sparked the Mercy girls into action. They created numerous chances with their quick passing and excellent movement and scored twice through McDaniel just before half-time.

Holy Cross carved out a couple of half-chances after the break but then Mercy turned on the power once more.

And their dominance told when McDaniel completed her hat-trick before adding a fourth. They sealed the game with another goal earning an impressive 5-1 victory.

Mercy College will now meet west Belfast school St Louise’s Comprehensive College in the 2018 final of the Electric Ireland Senior Schools’ Cup. The game is scheduled to be played at Moyola Park FC’s ground in Castledawson on 17 April.
