Manager Ian Baraclough reveals he is pleased with Northern Ireland squad’s energy

Northern Ireland trained at the National Stadium in Bucharest tonight ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Romania at the same venue tomorrow night (7.45 start UK time).

After the session Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough said he was pleased with the energy and enthusiasm in the squad throughout this week, whether training in the Romanian capital or back in Belfast.

He further said he was looking forward to his first game in charge but expressed disappointment that the 55,600-capacity arena would be empty for the Group B League 1 behind-closed-doors clash.

Damien Johnson, who recently joined Baraclough’s backroom team as assistant coach, put the players through their paces in Bucharest alongside the new boss.

A stand-out moment during the session at the Arena Nationala was a remarkable one-handed stop by goalkeeper Michael McGovern from a rasping Kyle Lafferty strike. The save sparked rapturous applause from all the players and backroom staff.
