McNair has successful operation on cruciate ligament

Northern Ireland midfielder Paddy McNair has begun the long ‘road to recovery’ after having a successful operation on his cruciate ligament injury this week.

The 21 year-old, who suffered the injury in the Black Cats 3-0 victory over Hull City last month, will not play again this season, but following his operation posted a picture of himself giving fans the thumbs up from his hospital bed.

Alongside the photo McNair wrote: “Successful op so now the road to recovery begins! Thank you all for the support and messages, I will be back.”

The Ballyclare man was only signed by Sunderland boss David Moyes from Manchester United in the summer and played just 12 games for the Premier League side before his season was cruelly ended.

“I think he’d just started to find his way in the Premier League,” said Moyes, “even though he had experience at Manchester United - and the games he was having were bringing him on and giving him confidence.

”We won’t see him again this season and all we can hope is getting him right for the start of next season.”
