France, Germany, Norway and Spain have reached the semi-finals of this year’s UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship.
The last four line-up was completed yesterday when Spain won their final group game to reach the semi-finals. They finished second in Group B behind France, the only team in the tournament with a 100 per cent record so far.
The previous day Norway drew with England to grab second place in Group A behind table toppers Germany, who lost to Northern Ireland but had already amassed six points and qualified for the latter stages of the tournament.
The first of the semi-finals will be between France and Norway.
That game is due to be staged at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park on Thursday (14 May) at 2pm.
The second semi-final will also be at the National Stadium on Thursday. The game between Germany and Spain will have a 6pm start.
Spain defeated Poland 4-1 at Inver Park in Larne yesterday to reach the last four.
First half goals from Carolina Ferrera, Maialen Valladares and Rocio Elaine put Spain in the driving seat. Captain Carlota Chacon added a fourth close to the hour mark, while Poland grabbed a consolation in stoppage time through substitute Zofia Burzan.
In yesterday’s other Group B game France strolled past Finland at the Coleraine Showgrounds.
The French, who had already defeated Finland and Spain in the group, scored three first half goals and a fourth in the second half to ease to a 4-1 victory.
Striker Margot Collin opened the scoring on 21 minutes and 10 minutes later midfielder Dienebou Niakate made it 2-0.
Forward Rachael Adedini netted from the penalty spot just before the break and grabbed a second on 81 minutes.
Finland’s only goal came on 66 minutes, midfielder Hertta Ahonen finding the back of the net with a free-kick from distance.
The Finns finished bottom of their group with three defeats, while Northern Ireland finished fourth in Group A after two defeats and a famous win over Germany.
The tournament, which is being hosted by the Irish FA this year, is a festival of women’s football showcasing some of the best young players in Europe.
The semi-finalists at the WU17 Euros have automatically qualified for this year’s FIFA WU17 World Cup, which is due to be staged in Morocco.
England, who finished third in Group A, will face Poland (third in Group B) at Inver Park in Larne on Thursday (4pm) in a play-off for Europe's fifth berth at that global tournament.
