Simon Hamilton elected Chair of the Irish FA Board

Simon Hamilton has been confirmed as Chair of the Irish Football Association Board.

Hamilton, a former Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive and Chief Executive of Belfast Chamber of Commerce, brings extensive leadership, governance and business experience to the role. He was elected by the Irish FA Board at the August meeting which took place last night.

Commenting on the appointment, Irish FA President Colin McKendry said:

“I am delighted to welcome Simon Hamilton as Chair of the Irish FA Board.

“He brings considerable experience, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to football at every level. I have no doubt he will provide strong leadership to the Board as we continue to deliver our strategy and build for the future.

“There are significant opportunities ahead for football in Northern Ireland and I look forward to working closely with Simon as we continue to strengthen the Irish FA and support the development of our game.”

Irish FA Chief Executive Patrick Nelson said:

“Simon is an excellent appointment as Chair of the Irish FA Board and I am very pleased to welcome him to the role.

“His leadership and governance experience make him extremely well placed to lead the Board. He understands both the opportunities ahead and the responsibility we have to clubs, players, volunteers, coaches, officials and supporters across Northern Ireland.

“I look forward to working closely with Simon and the Board as we continue to deliver our strategic priorities and grow and strengthen football at every level.”

Hamilton, who describes football as a ‘mainstay of his life’, said:

“It is a tremendous honour to be appointed Chair of the Irish Football Association.

“I know how much our game means to so many people across Northern Ireland. The excitement it generates, the communities it brings together and the opportunities it creates for young people and people of all ages make it a hugely important part of our society.

“I am looking forward to working with Colin, Patrick, my fellow Board members, the Senior Leadership Team and the wider Irish FA staff team as we continue to build on the progress that has been made and deliver for football across Northern Ireland.”
