Northern Ireland’s Over 70s walking football team has been crowned World Masters champions after an unbeaten campaign at the World Masters Walking Football Cup in Swansea.
The tournament, which took place from 13–16 August, attracted teams from 21 countries, with Northern Ireland represented in the Over 60s, Over 65s and Over 70s age categories.
The Over 70s produced a remarkable run throughout the competition, remaining unbeaten and recording victories over two England teams, alongside draws against the Republic of Ireland and Wales.
Their campaign culminated in a 2–0 victory in the final to secure the World Masters title. David Lemon, Ian Moore and George Gribben all contributed goals during the tournament, while goalkeeper Ellis Harvey was on form throughout, saving an impressive three penalties.
The Over 60s team also enjoyed an exceptional tournament, reaching the semi-finals and demonstrating that Northern Ireland can compete at the highest level of walking football. Their goals came from John McClure and Anthony Cafolla.
The Over 65s recorded victories over the Celtic Nations and Switzerland, with Jim Gorman and Noel Agnew finding the net. However, a number of drawn matches ultimately left them with too much ground to make up as they narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Across all three age groups, the Northern Ireland squads represented their country with immense pride, commitment, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
Team Manager Gary Barclay was delighted with the performances and believes the achievements in Swansea represent a significant milestone for walking football in Northern Ireland.
“The Over 70s team demonstrated skill and determination on the pitch, combined with the teamwork, camaraderie and positive attitude required to become World Masters champions.
“This achievement, alongside that of the Over 60s, is even more remarkable when you consider that there are over 200,000 people playing walking football across Great Britain, compared with around 300 players in Northern Ireland.
“Their success has put Northern Ireland walking football firmly on the map, and I look forward to seeing the walking football community continue to grow and prosper in the months and years ahead.”
Following the squads’ success in Wales, Gary is encouraging more people to discover the benefits of walking football.
Whether you are a regular player, have not kicked a ball in years, or are simply curious to find out more, everyone is welcome. Walking football provides an excellent opportunity to improve physical fitness, support mental wellbeing, make new friends and become part of a supportive and growing community.
