Hundreds of girls attended Allen Park in Antrim as schools from across Northern Ireland came together for the 2026 FIFA Girls’ Football Festivals Celebration Event.
The event, hosted in April, welcomed teams from a wide range of districts, with pupils travelling from schools across the country to take part in a day marking the culmination of a series of festivals delivered nationwide throughout the spring.
Designed specifically for Year 8 and Year 9 pupils, the celebration event provided girls with the opportunity to represent their schools in a positive and inclusive environment.
With the event being non-competitive in nature, it created a pressure-free setting that allowed the girls to fully enjoy their football. Across the pitches this was reflected in some incredible moments, with players scoring outstanding goals and showcasing impressive skills throughout the day.
School Development Officer Damian McLaughlin, who led on the event, said:
“It’s been a fantastic day and it’s been so good to go around the pitches and see all the girls from the schools having so much fun and interacting with the other teams.
“These events are really enjoyable for both the pupils and the teaching staff. We have been really lucky to have such brilliant weather and the teams have certainly showcased plenty of quality on the pitch, with so much great football on display.”
Leah Beattie, a teacher at Laurelhill Community College, also highlighted the impact of the day on her pupils, explaining that the girls “thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play a range of matches” and showed “great teamwork, enthusiasm and sportsmanship” throughout the event.
She added that opportunities like this are vital in helping to grow the girls’ game, giving pupils the chance to build confidence, develop their skills and enjoy representing their school in a fun and supportive environment.
The celebration event not only showcased the quality of football on display, but also highlighted the positive experiences being created for girls across schools throughout the programme. It provided a fitting conclusion to a series of festivals focused on participation, enjoyment and encouraging more girls to get involved in football.
