Obituary - Billy McCullough (1935-2026)

Former Northern Ireland defender William (Billy) James McCullough has died aged 90.

Born in Carrickfergus, McCullough began his footballing journey in the local game before earning a move to Portadown FC, where his performances quickly marked him out as a player of real promise. In September 1958, he secured a £5,000 transfer to Arsenal, a significant step that reflected both his talent and the growing reputation of Northern Ireland’s footballers on the wider stage.

A composed and dependable defender, McCullough went on to earn 10 senior caps for Northern Ireland national football team, proudly representing his country during a competitive era for international football.

McCullough remained a respected figure within the Northern Ireland and Arsenal football communities. He went on to work as an electrical engineer after retirement.

Irish FA President, Conrad Kirkwood, said:

“His journey from Carrickfergus to the top level of the English game served as an inspiration to aspiring players across the country.

“Billy will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, and his contribution to football in Northern Ireland will not be forgotten.”
