The Gambling Support Group (GSG), a player-led initiative developed in partnership with the Irish FA, Professional Footballers' Association of Northern Ireland (PFANI) and the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL), has launched a new confidential SMS support service for players and staff.
The service will initially operate as a one-season pilot across NIFL grounds, providing a discreet route for individuals seeking support.
To mark the launch, GSG has released a short video featuring members of the group speaking openly about their own experiences with gambling addiction and why they wanted to create a player-led support network.
Made up of four current and recently retired Irish League players who have experienced significant gambling challenges during their careers, GSG provides peer support from people who understand both the pressures of football and the realities of gambling addiction.
No player should have to face gambling addiction alone.

Promotional boards featuring QR codes are being installed at NIFL grounds across Northern Ireland. Players and staff can scan the QR code or text 07366 734909 to begin a confidential conversation with a member of the group, who can also help them access professional support services where required.
PFANI Chief Executive Michael Carvill said:
"The findings from our recent player survey highlighted a concerning level of gambling-related issues across the league. We commend the courage of the members of the Gambling Support Group; these current and former players lead the way and will enable others to seek support and guidance.
"We want every player to know that they are not alone and that asking for support is a sign of strength."
Chris Wright, Anti-Doping & Integrity Education Officer at the Irish FA, added:
"Gambling harm is one of football's most hidden challenges. Players can often feel isolated, embarrassed or unsure who to turn to. What makes GSG so powerful is that the support comes directly from people who have lived through the same experiences.
"Through our integrity education programme, we regularly speak to players and staff about betting rules, regulations and the risks associated with betting and gambling harm. However, we recognised that education alone isn't always enough.
"Our hope is that this peer-led approach encourages players to reach out earlier, start a conversation and realise they don't have to face these challenges alone."
