Ferguson the hero as Larne beat Glentoran on penalties

Larne progressed to the Clearer Water Irish Cup semi-finals after defeating Glentoran on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at The Oval.

Glentoran started brightly and threatened early through Pat Hoban, whose header from an Aaron McEneff corner flew over the bar. At the other end, Andrew Mills produced a sharp save to deny Andy Ryan after Aaron Donnelly’s long throw created an opening.

The hosts took the lead just before half-time. Jordan Stewart found Hoban in the box and the striker cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Cameron Palmer, who fired through the legs of Daniel Bent and past Rohan Ferguson.

Glentoran nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half when Ryan Cooney’s powerful strike drifted narrowly wide.

However, Larne eventually levelled with around 15 minutes remaining when substitute Conor McKendry broke down the right and squared for Ryan to tap home from close range.

Palmer came close to restoring the lead soon after when his effort struck the post, while Glentoran were later reduced to ten men after Michael-John Kamson Kamara received a second yellow card.

Neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the tie to penalties.

Ferguson was the hero for the visitors, saving spot-kicks from Hoban, Jordan Jenkins and Palmer, while Paul O’Neill struck the crossbar.

Tomas Cosgrove, Sean Graham and Chris Gallagher, with the decisive kick, converted to secure a 3-0 shoot-out victory for Gary Haveron's side.

The Irish Cup quarter-final action continues on Saturday afternoon as holders Dungannon Swifts host HW Welders at Stangmore Park, while Limavady United are at 'home' as they face Coleraine at the Coleraine Showgrounds and Loughgall welcome Cliftonville. All games kick off at 3pm.
