23 league goals ensures top award for Belfast striker

Striker Liam Boyce ended the season with 24 goals to his credit after scoring twice in Ross County’s 2-1 Premiership victory over Kilmarnock at the weekend.

The former Cliftonville forward’s brace at Rugby Park meant he ended the campaign with 23 league goals making him the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer, two ahead of nearest rival Scott Sinclair of Celtic.

The 26-year-old’s goalscoring exploits this term has fuelled speculation regarding his long-term future at the club, but County boss Jim McIntyre is determined to retain his services at Dingwall.

McIntyre said: “We’ve no interest in selling him. It is part and parcel of football, he’s scoring goals and people are interested.

“We want to retain Liam but it’s football, we can’t predict what will happen, he’s under contract for another season so we look forward to working with him next season.”

McIntyre praised Boyce’s commitment to the club for whom he has scored 55 goals in 115 appearances since arriving at Dingwall from Cliftonville three years ago.

“He’s been fantastic,” he added. “To get that amount of goals at a provincial club says a lot about him McIntyre added.

“He is a fantastic professional who works his socks off and is very conscientious about his job, and he deserves all the success and plaudits that are going his way.”

In the Premier League in England, Jonny Evans was on target with his second goal of the season as West Bromwich lost 2-1 at Swansea City yesterday, missing from the Baggies line-up though was Gareth McAuley who was still suffering from a thigh strain.

Finally, winger Shane Ferguson will be playing in the Championship next term after Millwall defeated Bradford City 1-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley.
