Irish FA holds annual Act of Remembrance

The Irish Football Association has held its annual Act of Remembrance to honour members of the football family who lost their lives in conflict while serving to protect our freedoms.

The service, held at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park, was organised by Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood and led by the association’s chaplain, Pastor Richard Donnan, on 5 November.

During the ceremony the names of the fallen were read by the President, who also laid a wreath on behalf of the Irish FA and the wider football community. A second wreath was laid by Gary McAllister from the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters’ Clubs.

Bible readings were delivered by Brian White (Irish FA Council) and Gary McAllister, while the congregation joined together in singing two hymns, O God Our Help In Ages Past and The Lord Is My Shepherd.

After the service Kirkwood said: “The Act of Remembrance is important as it helps us to remember those who gave their lives for us.

"For me the Act is made all the more memorable by being able to put faces and personal stories to the names. It was an honour to join the group in song too.”

This year’s roll of honour was compiled by Nigel Henderson from History Hub Ulster, who researched and documented the names, images and personal records of those remembered.
