NIPW | Kelly caps memorable week with a goal

It has been quite a week for Barnsley midfielder Patrick Kelly.

Not only did the 21-year-old make his full international debut for Northern Ireland, he also scored while helping his club to an emphatic win.

The former Coleraine midfielder's first senior international appearance came in last Monday's World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg.

And on Saturday he scored the second of five goals as Barnsley hammered Luton Town by five goals to nil. Luton had George Saville in their starting line-up.

Also in League One Northern Ireland striker Dion Charles took his tally to four goals in his last three games after finding the net in Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 victory at Mansfield Town at the weekend.

The 30-year-old, who struck in the 12th minute to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage, also had a goal disallowed for offside as the Terriers secured back-to-back league victories for the first time since August.

Striker Lee Bonis scored his fifth goal of the campaign and also provided an assist for Chesterfield’s opening goal as the League Two side drew 3-3 at Crewe Alexandra, and Lewis McCann scored his first for Fleetwood Town in their 3-1 victory at home to Shrewsbury Town.

In the Premier League Conor Bradley missed Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest after being ruled out for three weeks with a muscle injury picked up during Northern Ireland’s 1-0 victory over Luxembourg.

Midfielder Justin Devenny was used as a substitute for the 14th time this term as Crystal Palace won 2-0 at bottom-of-the-table Wolves and Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard both started again for Sunderland, who fell to a 1-0 defeat at Fulham.

“It was a disappointing result,” Hume told the club website. “We conceded a goal from a free-kick that probably wasn’t a free-kick.

“I think they created a lot of chances that we usually don’t give away and I think overall we know we can be better.”

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Ethan Galbraith, Isaac Price, Ciaron Brown and Terry Devlin all completed 90 minutes for their respective clubs, though Jordan Thompson, Jamie Donley, Ruairi McConville and Paul Smyth were unused substitutes for their clubs.

Back in League One, Conor Hazard kept his second clean sheet of the campaign as Plymouth Argyle ended a run of six consecutive defeats in all competitions with a 1-0 success at fellow strugglers Port Vale.

Northern Ireland U19 striker Ceadach O’Neill scored his eighth goal of the season in Arsenal’s 3-3 draw against Norwich City in the U18 Premier League Cup, while Coran Madden was on target in Brentford’s 6-4 win in the U18 Development League Cup against QPR.

Finally, Keri Halliday came off the bench to score her first goal for Hearts who defeated Hamilton Academical 8-1 in the Scottish Women’s Premier League on Sunday.
