Lewis added to Northern Ireland squad for World Cup qualifiers

Jamal Lewis has been added to the Northern Ireland squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg.

The 27-year-old defender, who recently joined EFL Championship side Preston North End on a short-term contract until the end of the year, last played for his country in October 2024.

Lewis, who was released by Newcastle United at the end of last season following a loan spell with Brazilian side Sao Paulo, has played three times for Preston so far and made his first start for the club at the weekend.

The defender, who made his senior international debut against South Korea in March 2018, has 39 caps for Northern Ireland to date.

His last outing was in a 0-0 draw with Belarus in October last year, which was also the last time he was in the squad.

Lewis’s inclusion means Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill now has 27 players in his panel for this month’s qualifiers.

Northern Ireland’s final two games in the group stages (Group A) of the European qualifiers will see them take on Slovakia at the Kosicka Futbalova Arena in Kosice on Friday (14 November) and then Luxembourg at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park next Monday (17 November).
