McDowell-Tuffey joins UEFA Coach Mentor Programme

Girls’ Elite Youth Academy Manager and Northern Ireland Women’s U16’s Head Coach, Danielle McDowell-Tuffey, has been selected to take part in UEFA’s prestigious Coach Mentor Programme.

McDowell-Tuffey is among the latest cohort of ambitious female coaches chosen for the initiative and will be mentored by Southampton Women’s head coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale over the next 18 months.

Launched as a pilot programme in 2018, the UEFA Coach Mentor Programme pairs emerging female coaches with some of the most experienced figures in the game, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to reach the highest levels of football.

The programme has already delivered significant results, with more than 80 per cent of mentees progressing into more senior coaching positions, including promotions from assistant coach to head coach, appointments within older age groups and opportunities with higher-ranked clubs and national teams.

Several former participants have also enjoyed success on the biggest stages in European football. Camille Abily won the UEFA Women’s Champions League as assistant coach with OL Lyonnes, while Sabine Loderer guided Germany to victory at this year’s UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship.

Throughout the programme, participants are encouraged to develop their coaching philosophy, strengthen their leadership skills and expand their professional networks, while benefiting from the expertise and guidance of experienced mentors.

Speaking about her expectations for the programme, McDowell-Tuffey said: “I hope my mentor can challenge my thinking, provide honest feedback and support both my professional and personal development. I would value guidance around leadership, managing environments and navigating the next steps in my coaching career.

“I hope the relationship helps me develop greater self-awareness, balance and perspective. I want to improve my ability to reflect, manage pressure and maintain a healthier work-life balance while continuing to perform at a high level.”

The latest group of mentors collectively brings a wealth of experience to the programme, having led more than 1,000 senior women’s international matches, over 150 games at major tournaments and more than 500 matches involving top-flight and second-tier clubs across Europe.
