Obituary: Bobby Irvine (1942–2026)

The Irish FA is saddened to learn of the passing of former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bobby Irvine, who has died at the age of 84.

Irvine won eight senior international caps for Northern Ireland between 1962 and 1965 and was widely respected for his assured performances between the posts. Among his finest displays came in May 1963 when he produced a series of outstanding saves in Bilbao to help Northern Ireland earn a memorable 1-1 draw against Spain in the European Championship.

At club level, Irvine was synonymous with Linfield, where he enjoyed considerable success after joining the club in 1957. During his time there, he won three Irish League titles and three Irish Cups, and played an important role in the legendary 1961/62 side that achieved the remarkable feat of winning seven trophies in a single season.

His performances led to a move to Stoke City, where he spent three years before later featuring for Altrincham and Telford United, the club where he concluded his playing career.

Bobby’s younger brother, former Northern Ireland striker Willie Irvine, passed away in July last year. The brothers proudly represented Northern Ireland together on three occasions at senior international level – a distinction that remains a source of pride for both their family and Northern Ireland football.

Irish FA President, Colin McKendry, said: “Bobby Irvine was a distinguished servant to Northern Ireland football whose achievements for both club and country will be long remembered. He was part of a golden era for Linfield and represented Northern Ireland with great pride and distinction. On behalf of the Irish FA, I extend our deepest sympathies to Bobby’s family, friends and all who knew him.”

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Irish FA are with Bobby’s family circle and friends at this difficult time.
