DfC hosts reception for Conrad Kirkwood

The Department for Communities (DfC) hosted a reception at Parliament Buildings in honour of outgoing Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood on Monday night

The event, led by Minister for Communities Gordon Lyons MLA, recognised Kirkwood’s service to the Association since June 2021 and his contribution to football in Northern Ireland during what the Minister described as “both a challenging and rewarding period”.

Kirkwood was joined at the reception by colleagues, MLAs, Northern Ireland supporters and his wife, Julie.

Reflecting on the occasion, Kirkwood said:

“I was delighted to accept the invitation from Minister for Communities Gordon Lyons to a reception celebrating my five years as President. It was a very kind gesture.

“I have enjoyed working with him to help promote, foster and develop the game for all. Together, I believe the Irish FA and the Department for Communities have made a significant impact.

“Among those invited were many of the people who have supported me throughout my time as President and helped make a difference. It was especially humbling that a group of Northern Ireland supporters took time out to join me.

“I now look forward to travelling with my wife Julie as a supporter later in the year.”

Kirkwood’s presidency has spanned a significant period for football in Northern Ireland, during which he has represented the Association at home and abroad while championing the continued growth and development of the game across all levels.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said:

“I was delighted to host this event at Parliament Buildings to mark Conrad’s time as President of the Irish FA. Under his tenure, we have seen major growth in participation and continued investment in infrastructure right across Northern Ireland, helping to ensure that football remains accessible, inclusive, and thriving at every level of the game.  Our international teams have also enjoyed considerable success including the senior women’s team qualifying for Euro 2022 and the senior men winning their Nations League group. As Northern Ireland fans we all thank Conrad for his service as Irish FA President and wish him well for the future.”
