Northern Ireland internationals on the move as Charles and Howe seal club transfers

Northern Ireland internationals Pierce Charles and Casey Howe have both completed club moves ahead of the new season, with Charles returning to Manchester City and Howe joining Celtic FC Women.

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City after completing a reported £3 million move from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 20-year-old returns to the Etihad Stadium having previously progressed through the club's academy alongside his older brother, Shea, before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2021.

During his time at Hillsborough, Charles made 36 first-team appearances and established a reputation as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in English football.

To continue his development and gain regular first-team football, City have immediately loaned the Northern Ireland international to Championship side QPR for the 2026/27 season.

Speaking after completing his return, Charles said: "To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family.

"I know first-hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future.

"City take the development of young players very seriously, so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too.

"I'll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper."

Manchester City's Director of Football, Hugo Viana, said: "Pierce is someone whose progress we have been following closely, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City."

Meanwhile, winger Casey Howe has completed a two-year move to Celtic FC Women following her departure from Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

The Fermanagh-born forward has previously represented Linfield, Glentoran, Sligo Rovers, Athlone Town and Wolves during her career and has earned 16 senior caps for Northern Ireland.

Speaking after signing for Celtic, Howe said: "It's amazing to be here, a club with such a rich history of winning trophies, both across the men's and the women's side.

"I've won silverware back in Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and in England. So I just want to win. I love winning.

"So it's definitely something that excites me to come in, hopefully win some more silver here."

Celtic Women's Head Coach Grant Scott added: "Casey is an exciting young player who our fans will enjoy watching."
