PFA NI and Irish FA to support transition into coaching

The Irish FA and the Professional Footballers’ Association Northern Ireland (PFA NI) have announced a new partnership aimed at helping current and former players remain in the game.

The initiative is set to provide access to world-class coaching qualifications and tailored learning opportunities.

Through the partnership the association’s Coach Education Department will work with PFA NI members to offer discounted access to UEFA-endorsed coaching courses, including the UEFA C, B and A diplomas, as well as specialist goalkeeping and youth diplomas.

Michael Carvill, CEO of PFA NI, welcomed the initiative.

He said: “This is an exciting step forward for our members. Many players dedicate their lives to the game and this partnership ensures that when their playing careers finish they have the tools, pathways and support to continue contributing to football for years to come.

“It’s about retaining invaluable experience within our game and inspiring the next generation.”

As part of the initiative participants will complete practical coaching hours within club academies or local youth systems - ensuring young players across Northern Ireland benefit directly from the knowledge, leadership and experience of seasoned professionals.

Patrick Nelson, Chief Executive of the Irish FA, added: “We’re delighted to work alongside PFA NI on this important initiative.

“Supporting players in their transition from the pitch to the technical area is vital, not only for their personal development but for the future health of the game. This partnership aligns perfectly with our vision to develop coaches and leaders who can make a lasting impact at all levels.”

In addition to formal qualifications the partnership will also offer bespoke workshops, CPD sessions and one-to-one mentoring focused on leadership and personal identity.
