Lee Bonis scores 16th of the season for Chesterfield | NIPW

A brace by Northern Ireland striker Lee Bonis fired Chesterfield back into the League Two play-off positions following a 2-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra at the weekend.

The 26-year-old, who won two Irish League titles with Larne, took his tally for the campaign to an impressive 16 after bundling the ball over for the Spireites opener, and then coolly lobbing the keeper for his double midway through the second half.

Chesterfield now travel to eighth-place Swindon Town in their final league fixture of the season, knowing a point against the Robins will secure their place in the play off’s.

Also getting their name on the scoresheet over the weekend was Northern Ireland U21 international Max Wilson, who hit the winner for Chorley in their 2-1 National League North victory at home to Worksop Town.

Meanwhile, midfielder Shea Charles came on as a substitute for Southampton, who were a goal up with eight minutes to play in their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley, only for the Premier League giants to confirm their place in the Final against Chelsea next month with two late goals.

In the Premier League, both Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard were reinstated to the Sunderland starting line-up as the Black Cats were thumped 5-0 at home by relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, with Hume scoring an own goal to open the visitors’ account on 17 minutes.

There was disappointment for the Northern Ireland quartet of Brodie Spencer, Ciaron Brown, Jamie McDonnell and Jamie Donley after Oxford United were relegated to League One despite a 4-1 victory at home to bottom-of-the-table Sheffield Wednesday.

Isaac Price will be playing in the second tier of English football again next season after West Brom secured their Championship status following a point in a goalless draw at the Hawthorns against Ipswich Town.

Brenna McPartlan came on as sub for Burnley Women in the 3-0 win over Stoke City as they secured the National League Northern Premier Division title and will join Southern Premier Division champions Watford in the WSL 2 next season.

In League One, Plymouth Argyle defeated Port Vale 2-1 at home to keep their chances of a play-off spot alive despite having goalkeeper Conor Hazard sent off in just the fifth minute for handling the ball outside of the area.

“What I ask our goalkeepers to do, covering the balls over the top, allows you to keep a high defensive line,” admitted Argyle boss Tom Cleverley.

“I have to understand the risk that comes with that. Conor will know that he's made a poor decision in terms of getting under the ball, but I ask our goalkeepers to cover the depth that has a little bit of risk attached to it.”

“Conor will be disappointed with the action, but I have to accept some responsibility for that as well.”

Elsewhere in the division, there was a first league start for Doncaster Rovers midfielder Darren Robinson and a first team debut for 20-year-old defender Bayley McCann, son of Rovers manager Grant.

“I thought Robbo was really, really good,” declared Grant McCann. “For his first league start in a game against a team like Stevenage, he held his own, he kept the ball well, he was calm, and he broke things up, so I was really pleased with his first start.

Commenting on his son making his debut, he added; “Bayley has earned that. He has had two really good loan spells and he has come back into the group over the last couple of weeks, and he has trained with intensity.

“He is the quickest player in the squad and he’ll be happy with his cameo and I’m really pleased for him.”

Goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell kept his 12th clean sheet of the season as Blackpool confirmed their League One place for next season with a 1-0 win at home to Leyton Orient while Josh Clarke chalked up his 14th clean sheet of the campaign for Partick Thistle, who drew 0-0 away to Arbroath in the Scottish Championship.

Finally, Braiden Graham took his total of goals for Everton’s U21 side this season to 20 with a double in the 3-2 play off win over Watford.
