NIPW | Taylor on target for Tangerines

Striker Dale Taylor scored his first league goal of the season as Blackpool extended their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions with a 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic at the weekend.

Within seconds of entering the fray as a substitute, Taylor provided the assist for Ashley Fletcher’s opening goal for the visitors just before the hour mark, and five minutes later he bundled home a second against his former side to cap a fine individual performance.

The forward is easing his way back into action following a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

“I’m delighted for Dale Taylor,” declared Tangerines boss Ian Evatt after the game. “He’s worked so hard to get back. To steal the ball and show the composure to find Ashley Fletcher was brilliant.

“The second goal was a moment of quality, a really good move, and scored at the right time.”

Also in League One Jamie Reid found the net for the second successive game in Stevenage’s 2-2 draw at home to Burton Albion and midfielder Cameron McGeehan struck twice as Northampton Town defeated AFC Wimbledon 3-1 on Friday night.

In-form Lee Bonis made it eight in his last 10 appearances as he scored the only goal of the game to give Chesterfield the points in their League Two clash at Shrewsbury Town, and Justin Devenny made it two in two games when he converted a consolation goal from the penalty spot in Crystal Palace’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United.

Elsewhere Northern Ireland U19 midfielder Max Wilson, who is on loan from Preston North End to Chorley, scored his first goal for the National League North side in a 4-2 home win against Hereford United.

Unfortunately Liverpool’s Conor Bradley was substituted at half-time in the Reds' 2-1 Premier League win at Spurs after picking up an ankle injury, although Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard again played the full 90 minutes for Sunderland in their goalless draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.

It was the Black Cats’ sixth clean sheet this term, a record that Hume, who was again deployed as a left back on Saturday, is rightly proud of.

“As a team we pride ourselves on working hard and setting high standards,” said the former Linfield and Ballymena United player. “It was really pleasing to keep another clean sheet and it was a real team effort.

“I’m really enjoying playing in the league I wanted to play in since I was young. I’ll play wherever I’m asked to play and do my job for the team.”

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Under-21 international Tom Atcheson came off the bench to make his league debut for Blackburn Rovers, and there was a welcome return from injury for Preston North End’s Ali McCann and Oxford United’s Brodie Spencer.

Midfielder Ethan Galbraith picked up his fourth man-of-the-match award of the season following his scintillating performance in Swansea City’s 2-1 home win over Wrexham in the Welsh derby on Friday night.

After the victory the former Manchester United player, who joined the Swans from Leyton Orient in the summer, was keen to stress the win over their bitter rivals was a team effort.

“I feel like anyone could have won player of the match with the passion we played with; everyone kept going until the end. It's a great feeling to pick one (a win) up and as a team get the three points.”

On-loan goalkeeper Josh Clarke kept his ninth clean sheet of the season as Partick Thistle were held to a scoreless draw at home in their Scottish Championship clash with Raith Rovers.

Finally, Glenn McCourt scored his second of the season for Norwich City in their 6-3 U18 Premier League defeat at home to Leicester City.
