NIPW | Kelly helps Barnsley into FA Cup third round

Patrick Kelly secured Barnsley’s place in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup at the weekend.

Kelly, who last month made his full international debut against Luxembourg, entered the fray at half-time against Peterborough United and struck the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute to put the Yorkshire outfit into the hat for tonight’s third round draw.

Elsewhere in the competition former Larne striker Lee Bonis made it five goals in his last seven matches when he opened the scoring for Chesterfield in their second round tie at home to Doncaster Rovers, only for the visitors to fight back and win the game 2-1 in the dying moments of the contest.

There was also an exit from the competition at the second round stage for Bolton Wanderers who went down 4-0 at League Two side Swindon Town, prompting central defender Eoin Toal to issue an apology to the travelling support.

“First and foremost we weren’t good enough anywhere around the pitch,” said 26-year-old Toal. “We are really disappointed. Ultimately loads of travelling fans came here to watch us and we have let them down badly; we let ourselves down, too. We have to make up for it now on Tuesday.”

Also on the scoresheet at the weekend was winger Conor McMenamin who netted for the first time this season as St Mirren ended a run of four games without a win with a 2-0 home victory over Dundee United.

Teenage winger Callum Burnside, who is on loan at Alloa Athletic from Rangers, scored his second of the campaign for the Wasps as they ended a four-match winless run with a comfortable 4-0 success at home to Peterhead in League One in Scotland.

In the National League North U21 international defender Bayley McCann scored a consolation goal for Alfreton Town, who lost 2-1 at Curzon Ashton.

After missing the last four games with a muscle injury Conor Bradley returned to the Liverpool starting line-up for the 3-3 Premier League draw at Elland Road with Leeds United, setting up the visitors’ second goal with a superb cross for Hugo Ekitike.

There were also starts for Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard in Sunderland’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City, while Justin Devenny was again used from the Crystal Palace bench in the Eagles’ late 2-1 victory at Fulham.

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles’ long-awaited return from a shoulder injury ended prematurely after Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park was abandoned in the second half due to a waterlogged pitch.

In the U18 Premier League Luke Hawe took his tally for the season to six with a brace in Southampton’s 5-0 win over Reading, while Joel Kerr also scored twice for West Ham United who had a 5-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Former Linfield player Kalum Thompson scored his fifth of the season and also weighed in with an assist in Nottingham Forest U18s' 2-1 success at home to Leeds United.

Finally, in the FA Youth Cup, another former Linfield youngster, Braiden Graham, was also on target twice, his second being a stunning left-foot volley, to help Everton to a 3-1 victory away at Millwall.
