Central midfielder Lukas Doherty has made strides at the JD Academy.
Doherty, who plays his club football for Finn Harps in Co Donegal, began playing football in a sports hall from a very young age. Now the 15-year-old, who turns 16 next month, is paving his way through the elite pathway.
There are some challenges that come with being part of an elite programme but he has embraced every opportunity that has come his way.
“The intensity and standard are much higher at the international level compared to club football,” said Doherty. “However, it’s been an unreal experience. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it so far, and I have made many memories. I’m very proud to represent Northern Ireland.”
The midfielder pointed out how after training sessions the academy players do gym work. Although difficult, he uses the extra practice to focus on aspects of his game he feels need development. In particular he is working on his speed, doing drills in the gym and on the pitch to improve.
The young prospect takes inspiration from other central midfielders in the sport, including one of the best in Europe in the position currently.
“A professional player that I look up to is Pedri,” Doherty revealed, adding that he admires the Barcelona and Spain player’s composure and his technical ability.
Over the next year Doherty wants to do well in his GCSEs and get a trial opportunity. Ultimately his career goal is to play the game professionally.
