NIPW | Galbraith on target for the Swans

Midfielder Ethan Galbraith scored his third goal of the season at the weekend as Swansea City suffered a fifth straight Championship defeat.

The Swans held a half-time lead at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion, but the Baggies ran out 3-2 winners.

Galbraith put the Welsh side 2-0 ahead after just 11 minutes with a superb right-footed strike from outside the area.

However, the Baggies, who had replaced Isaac Price at the break, fought back to score three second half goals to secure just a second league win in eight outings.

Also on the scoresheet over the weekend was AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Johnson who headed home his second of the campaign in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Huddersfield Town to end a sequence of three straight League One defeats.

Speaking after the game, Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson said: “I think Johno (Ryan Johnson) can do more of that. With his physicality, his height, his aggression, he does it in our box time and time again, but I also want him to be more of a threat in the opposition box.”

Meanwhile, former Crusaders and Cliftonville striker Ronan Hale scored his 12th goal of the season as Ross County eased to a 2-0 win at Banks o’Dee in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

In the Premier League injury again ruled Conor Bradley out of Liverpool’s win at West Ham, while Justin Devenny came on as a substitute for the 15th time this season as Crystal Palace relinquished a 1-0 half-time lead to lose 2-1 at home to Manchester United.

Elsewhere Dan Ballard was named in the starting XI and Trai Hume relegated to the bench as Sunderland stormed back from two goals down to beat AFC Bournemouth 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Stadium of Light. However, Hume did come off the bench around the hour mark.

“It was an eventful game,” said Ballard. “I thought we actually started well, but found ourselves 2-0 down. We didn't let our heads drop. The team and the crowd believed, and it was some turnaround in the end.

“I think the lads were pretty calm, and I still felt we could win the game when 2-0 down. We’ve scored some late goals this year and last year, so there's a real belief in the team.

“We’re taking it game by game. We're desperate to stay in the league. That was the target at the start of the season, and we want those 40 points."

In the Championship Terry Devlin missed Portsmouth’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bristol City through suspension, though Makenzie Kirk played the final 18 minutes as a substitute.

There were assists for Norwich City defender Ruairi McConville, who was making his second successive start for the Canaries, and Preston North End midfielder Jordan Thompson, who is now fully recovered from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the opening three months of the season.

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who has been missing since August due to a shoulder injury, is expected to be back in action this week as part of a Sheffield Wednesday XI that are due to play in a Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup match.

Northern Ireland U21 goalkeeper Josh Clarke kept his seventh clean sheet in 16 appearances as Partick Thistle progressed to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 away win at Forfar Athletic.

Finally, there were goals in the U18 Premier League for Southampton’s Luke Hawe, Joel Kerr of West Ham and Arsenal’s Ceadach O’Neill who has now found the net nine times this season for the Gunners’ U18 side.
