Born to Play: Jimmy Nicholl

As Jimmy Nicholl celebrates his 69th birthday today, we look at some of his best moments playing for Northern Ireland…

On 15 October 1980 right-back Nicholl scored the third goal in a 3-0 home victory against Sweden in a FIFA World Cup 1982 qualifier.

His long-range screamer - his only international goal - effectively set Northern Ireland on their way to qualification for the global tournament and their first appearance at the finals since the 1958 edition.

At the 1982 World Cup in Spain he started every match during the team’s superb run in the tournament. His defensive contributions were key as Northern Ireland reached the quarter-finals.

During their famous run they defeated hosts Spain in their final group stage match, securing top spot in Group 5 ahead of the Spanish, Yugoslavia and Honduras.

The former Manchester United, Rangers, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion defender, who won 73 caps for his country, also played for Northern Ireland at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

When his illustrious playing career ended Nicholl decided to shift into a managerial career.

After managing clubs such as Raith Rovers, Millwall and others, he became Northern Ireland’s assistant manager in 2015, working alongside Michael O’Neill. He would later work under Ian Baraclough and is now with O’Neill once again.

Nicholl has been an instrumental part in Northern Ireland’s legacy, both on and off the pitch.

Happy Birthday Jimmy!
