Broadcaster Stephen Watson says covering Northern Ireland has been “one of the great privileges of my professional life” after being awarded an MBE in His Majesty The King's Birthday Honours List at the weekend.
One of the most recognisable voices in local sport, Watson has worked closely with the Irish FA throughout much of his broadcasting career, chronicling some of the most memorable moments in Northern Ireland football history.
Reflecting on the honour, he said:
“From my earliest days reporting on the Irish League to following our men's and women's teams onto the biggest stages, I have always felt a deep responsibility to tell their stories with honesty, pride and respect.
“I've been fortunate to witness moments that will stay with me forever. Fronting the BBC's coverage of UEFA Euro 2016 was a career highlight, not just because of the scale of the tournament, but because of the incredible spirit our supporters brought to it.”
Among the highlights of Watson's career were presenting the BBC's coverage of UEFA Euro 2016, when Northern Ireland reached its first major tournament in 30 years, and reporting on the qualifying campaign that secured a place at the finals in France.
He also recalled the famous nights during the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, when David Healy's goals helped inspire a series of memorable victories and captured the imagination of supporters across the country.
“And I will never forget those magical nights when David Healy's goals seemed to unite the entire country, occasions when football reminded us of its unique power to lift people and bring them together,” Watson added.
“If, through my work, I have helped shine a light on the dedication, resilience and passion that define Northern Ireland football, then I consider that a tremendous honour.
“I remain grateful for every opportunity to share these stories with supporters at home and around the world.”
