Clinical Bannsiders cruise through

Coleraine cruised into the next round of the Clearer Water Irish Cup with a four-goal defeat of Crusaders at the Showgrounds.

The Bannsiders got off to the better start, with Zane Okoro and Joel Cooper threatening but the Crues had a moment of their own with just over ten minutes on the clock when Elliot Dunlop forced a save out of keeper Ryan Schofield.

However Coleraine continued to pose the greater danger, with Will Patching producing a stop from Musa Dibaga from a free-kick and then a reflex save after being teed up by Matthew Shevlin.

Perhaps the pivotal moment of the game arrived just two minutes after the break when the visitors were reduced to ten men following Brendan Hamilton's caution for a challenge on Okoro, his second of the game.

Coleraine made their extra man count almost immediately when, from the subsequent free-kick, Ben Wylie sent the ball over for Mark Connolly to nod home at the back post from close range.

Ruaidhri Higgins' side doubled their advantage on 65 minutes with Patching getting his name on the scoresheet after dispatching a superbly struck free-kick past the Crues keeper at his near post.

The game was effectively ended as a contest just a couple of minutes after that when substitute James Akintunde, just on the pitch, pounced on some poor defending to knock the ball home at the second attempt.

Then, just over ten minutes from the end, Cooper wrapped the scoring up by racing clear of the defence onto a Patching through ball before finishing beyond Dibaga into the far corner.

The action continues tomorrow with a bumper afternoon of fifth round thrills and spills from 1:30pm.
