Northern Ireland senior men’s team coach Diarmuid O’Carroll has been appointed first-team coach at Czech First League champions AC Sparta Prague.
O’Carroll departs his role as lead coach of Newcastle United’s U-21 side to take up the new position, bringing his coaching experience to one of Central Europe’s most historic clubs.
Despite the move abroad, O’Carroll will remain part of Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland backroom team and will continue to support the senior men’s side during international windows.
Speaking about the move, O’Carroll said:
“Coaching abroad was always something I aspired to do, so when this opportunity arose it was something I couldn’t pass up.
Crucially, the role also allows me to continue on my journey with the Northern Ireland senior men’s team. I’m excited about this current crop of players and looking forward to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.”
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill welcomed the development:
“I’m delighted for Diarmuid. He’s an excellent young coach, an important part of our setup, and this move will undoubtedly further his development.”
O’Carroll will begin his new role with Sparta Prague ahead of their 2025/26 pre-season campaign.
