Ballymena Showgrounds to host first leg of UWNL play-off

The venues for Northern Ireland’s UEFA Women’s Nations League promotion/relegation play-off against Iceland this autumn have been revealed.

The Showgrounds in Ballymena will host the first leg of the play-off on Friday 24 October (kick-off time TBC).

And the second leg will be staged at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Reykjavík on Tuesday 28 October (kick-off time TBC).

Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team will be battling it out with Iceland for a place in League A in the third edition of the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

Northern Ireland secured a promotion/relegation play-off by finishing second in their League B group in the second edition of UWNL.

Iceland, who competed in UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 last month, finished third in their League A group behind France and Norway, while Switzerland finished bottom of their group.

The winner of the tie in October will play in League A for the European Qualifiers phase for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, while the defeated team will play in League B.

Northern Ireland’s campaign in the second edition of the competition saw them win two, draw two and lose two in League B Group 1. The only defeats for Tanya Oxtoby’s side came against Women’s Euros-bound table toppers Poland, who were automatically promoted to League A.

In last month’s Euros, which were staged in Switzerland, Iceland narrowly lost out to Finland (1-0), the Swiss (2-0) and Norway (4-3) in their group games.

Tickets for the UWNL play-off match in Ballymena on 24 October will be available from noon on Thursday (28 August) via irishfa.com/tickets.
