McAuley reveals U19s squad for Euro qualifiers

Northern Ireland Under-19s boss Gareth McAuley has named his squad for Euro qualifiers later this month.

The U19s are set to face Switzerland, North Macedonia and Malta in round two of the qualifiers for UEFA U19 Euro 2027.

And North Macedonia is hosting the games in the League B Group 5 mini tournament.

McAuley has chosen a 22-player panel to compete in the three qualifiers.

There are no newcomers to the Northern Ireland set-up in the squad, with all the players having previously played for the U19s or U17s, with several having progressed from the Irish FA JD Academy.

Northern Ireland’s opening match is against hosts North Macedonia next Wednesday (11 November) at Stadium Kukus in Turnovo in the south-east of the country. Kick-off time is 1pm CET/12 noon GMT.

Game two is on Saturday 14 November against Malta at Stadium Mladost in Strumica (1pm CET start), which is also in the south-east of North Macedonia.

And their final group game will be against the Swiss on Tuesday 17 November at Stadium Mladost in Strumica (12pm CET).

In round one of the qualifiers, played back in March, Northern Ireland’s U19s had a 2-1 comeback win over Azerbaijan in their first match in a three-team League B mini tournament. They then drew 0-0 with hosts Lithuania, who topped the group ahead of them on goal difference.

Switzerland, who were relegated from League A in the first round, are the top seeds in League B Group 5, while Northern Ireland are second seeds, North Macedonia third and Malta fourth seeds.

Under a new format there are now three rounds of qualifiers for each edition of UEFA’s U19 Euros.

In League B a total of 26 teams were drawn into five groups of four teams and two groups of three teams. All group winners in League B are promoted to League A for Round 3.

R3 is set to be played in the spring. The seven group winners in League A will join hosts Czechia in the final tournament next summer.

The Northern Ireland U19s squad for this month’s B5 mini tournament in North Macedonia is as follows:

Goalkeepers – Dan O’Keefe (Wrexham), Phoenix Blayney (Larne), Luke Bellingham (Ballymena).

Defenders – Broghan Sewell and Calum Anderson (both Southampton), Shea McGarry (Celtic), Callum Leacock (West Ham United), Alfie McIlroy (Blackburn Rovers), Alfie Wilson (Hearts), Coist Walker (Hull City).

Midfielders – Troy Savage (Burnley), Jay McEvoy (Manchester United), Kalum Thompson (Nottingham Forest), Coran Madden (Brentford), Joel Kerr (West Ham United), Jahmi Kellyman (Aston Villa), Matthew Burns (Sunderland).

Forwards – Sidney Eldred (Ipswich Town), George Feeney (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Hawe (Southampton), Paul McGovern (Falkirk), Eamonn Tohill (Middlesbrough).
