Repeat of the 2012/13 decider sure to be a thriller

The biggest night in youth football is almost upon us once more when Ballinamallard United III and Linfield Rangers meet in the Harry Cavan Youth Cup final on Friday night at Stangmore Park (kick-off 7:30pm).

In what will be a repeat of the 2012/13 decider, the Mallards will be hoping to exact revenge for Linfield's 3-1 win on that occasion.

Indeed, for Ballinamallard, it'll be a chance to get their hands on the trophy for a third time with the current crop of players hoping to emulate the Class of both 2002 and 2006.

The Mallards have been in impressive form enroute to the final, recording heavy wins over Lisbellaw United and Mountjoy United either side of a narrower defeat of Dungannon Swifts.

It was that quarter-final against the Swifts that most pleased boss Derek Sharpe.

"We knew what to expect from Lisbellaw and Mountjoy, but Dungannon were more of a test for us. However, we came through that well and showed good character to get the win," he said.

And he's very aware that the Blues will prove to be their biggest challenge yet.

"We haven't had much joy against Linfield at U20 level. Six or seven of that side are eligible to play on Friday and, as a club, they are challenging on all fronts, but we'll be up for it.

"We have Ben McCann and Callum Frempong available to step down from the senior side, and their experience will help us. I'm confident we can put up a good fight."

Linfield reached Friday's final following a 5-0 thumping of Cookstown Youth at Shamrock Park, thanks in no small part to a Ryan Strain hat-trick.

The 17-year-old is beginning to make people sit up and take notice this season, having already made his senior debut and scoring for Northern Ireland U18 Schoolboys in wins against England and Scotland.

Prior to that Bryan McCarroll's side hit seven without reply past Enniskillen Athletic while St. Luke's fell by the wayside in the second round.

As previously mentioned, Linfield are still in hunt for silverware elsewhere and with a number of this side having already tasted success with the Swifts there'll be no shortage of drive or ambition within the squad to add to their medal haul.
