The UEFA Executive Committee today confirmed that as a result of the global COVID-19 outbreak the postponed UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 will now be staged in July 2022.
The tournament, which will be hosted by England, is one that Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team very much have their sights set on.
Northern Ireland’s senior women were due to travel to Minsk to take on Belarus on April 14 for what would have been their fifth qualifying match of the campaign, but it has been postponed in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. June’s scheduled home double-header against Belarus and Faroe Islands will also have to be rescheduled.
Norway are the runaway leaders in the Group C but Kenny Shiels’ squad are still in with a shout of securing a play-off spot.
The decision to move UEFA Women’s EURO comes after last month’s announcement that UEFA EURO 2020 would be postponed to 2021 in response to the threat of COVID-19.
