ONE of Craigavon Borough Council’s innovative coaching programmes has received prestigious recognition by none other than UEFA.
Nominated by Keith Gibson - IFA Grassroots Officer for Craigavon - the ‘Multi Use Games Area Coaching Programme’, which is run by the Sports Development Department, has been recognised for their promotion and development of Grassroots Football in Northern Ireland.
The programme has been running for the past year getting young people involved in football on a regular basis and developing their skills and confidence week after week. The sessions take place on three different Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) based in Parkmore, Ardowen and North Lurgan. As well as focusing on football, the young people also take part in volleyball, basketball and tennis.
“We are delighted that both UEFA and the IFA have recognized the Council’s contribution with the development of football at a grassroots level,” commented Daryn Greene, Community Sports Development Officer at Craigavon Borough Council.
“We have an excellent working relationship with the IFA and are grateful for the nomination. The equipment we have received from UEFA will be used to maximize the opportunities for young people in the most deprived areas to get involved in the game.”
Keith was thrilled that the Council has been recognised in this prestigious way.“Credit must go to the Sports Development Unit of the Council for its innovative programmes including the installation of MUGA pitches and giving communities the opportunity of sports programmes on their doorstep,” said Keith. “We look forward to strengthening and evolving our relationship with Craigavon Borough Councilin the future.”
The Sports Development Department received specially commissioned UEFA footballs and training bibs for use on the programme.
The IFA’s Grassroots Programme has been recognized by UEFA as a model of good practice, with it recently being awarded ‘five star’ status within UEFA Grassroots Charter Scheme. The IFA programme ranks alongside the likes of Holland, Germany and England with only nine countries achieving this five star status.
