TEN GOAL THRILLER

04/02/2010

OUR Lady and St Patrick’s College (Knock) from east Belfast overcame local rivals Grosvenor Grammar in a 10 goal thriller to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Carnegie Schools’ Senior Cup.

The Our Lady and St Patrick’s team started the game well with Laura Hughes and Jessica Foy making probing runs through the heart of the Grosvenor defence.  Five minutes into the game Grosvenor’s Ruth Millar intercepted the ball in centre midfield and played the ball into Leoran Craig who slotted the ball past Sophie Tazzioli in the Our Lady and St Pat’s goal.  Our Lady and St Pat’s responded immediately and following a good period of build up play Jessica Foy was on hand to level the score.  Foy added a second goal moments later when she got on the end of a Laura Hughes cross into the box.

Undeterred, Grosvenor continued to battle with Millar and Nicole Caughey breaking up play in the centre of midfield.  In the 16th minute a loose ball eluded the Grosvenor defence and Craig outpaced her marker to reach the ball first and coolly slotted the ball under Tazzioli in nets making the score 2–2.  The first half finished with a flurry of activity and goals at both ends of the field.  Our Lady and St Pat’s scored their third through Anna Finnegan, before Nicole Caughey pounced on a defensive error to once again bring the score level at 3–3.

Our Lady and St Pat’s exploded into action in the second half scoring immediately from kick-off courtesy of some excellent work on the right by Jessica Foy and some clinical finishing by Laura Hughes. Three minutes later Jessica Carty added a further goal for Our Lady and St Pat’s and with the score now at 5–3 seemed to have secured victory for the girls’ in blue.  Grosvenor, however, continued to press and were rewarded for their efforts when Caughey got her second of the game.

Buoyed by the goal, Grosvenor went in search of the equaliser and started to put the Our Lady and St Pat’s defence under pressure.  Against the run of play Our Lady and St Pat’s seized the ball in midfield and passed it out to the right flank where Finnegan whipped the ball into the box.  Grosvenor’s keeper Shannon Heaney managed to parry the ball away from the goal, only for it to fall into the path of Laura Hughes who volleyed it into the net.  Final score Our Lady and St Pat’s 6 – 4 Grosvenor Grammar.
