NORTHERN IRELAND U21 BOYS SET TO TAKE ON ICELAND

08/10/2009

THE Northern Ireland U21 squad will travel to Iceland this weekend in preparation for Tuesday’s 2009/11 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier at the Grindavíkurvöllur Stadium.

The team lost the first two games in the campaign (2-0 away to Czech Republic and 6-2 at home to Iceland); however assistant manager, Alfie Wylie, who will be in charge of the team for the qualifying match, believes that the squad can bounce back.

“We had a very difficult game against Iceland last month which ended in a heavy 6-2 defeat at home.  But that said, on the day the stats showed that we had more shots, but the Iceland finishing was clinical,” said Alfie.

“There are a number of changes to the squad – some of the players are with the Under 19 side this week in Bosnia & Herzegovina for a UEFA European qualifying tournament and a number of others are missing through injury or illness.  However we have a few players in the squad who have senior team experience.”

Alfie added: “We arrive in Iceland on Sunday; and the time between then and Tuesday will be well spent ensuring that everyone is well prepared.  The players are all upbeat and are looking forward to the game. Yes, we all know that it will be a very difficult game, but we will be approaching it in a positive manner and will be going out there with the aim of getting our campaign back on track.”
