THE Irish FA backed World United (WU) joined forces with players associated with NICRAS (Northern Ireland Committee of Refugees and Asylum Seekers) to play a Dads team connected to the Belfast Model School for Girls.
The WU/NICRAS team consisted of young men from Somalia, Sudan and other African countries augmented by a few WU regulars. The collaboration happened on the back of IFA sponsored training nights, coached by Irish League legends Tommy Kincaid and Justin McBride of Ards FC.
On a night more suitable for sunbathing both teams were keen to stamp their authority on the game, early on. While the WU/NICRAS lads got to know each other and their positions, the Dads pressed forward at every opportunity and should have netted on several occasions.
It was WU/NICRAS though, who almost opened the scoring but a low drive was well blocked by the opposing keeper. With 30 minutes on the clock the pressure on the WU/NICRAS defence finally told when a measured lob found the net. This was quickly followed by a penalty for hand ball and top corner rocket which put the Dads three goals up at half time.
After the break play by WU/NICRAS became more organised and purposeful and they produced a number of chances. Following some neat wing play Zarmora played a tempting ball into Moffett who blazed a first time shot low into the corner of the net. Unfortunately, this was all WU/NICRAS could manage in terms of scoring opportunities. Shortly before the final whistle the Dads struck again with a headed goal following a quickly taken corner.
The match whilst keenly contested was played in an excellent spirit with both teams truly representing the ‘Football for All’ ethos.
Final Score WU/NICRAS 1 – 4 Dads XI
Thanks go to Irish League star Darren Nixon from Ards FC for organising the game and to the Belfast Girls Model in particular Leigh Braiden (Community and Family Co-ordinator) and The Parents Voice for providing the after match food and refreshments.
“This was a great event and much needed for the area, it raises the profile of the school in the community and something which will be developed further in the future, thanks to all for their support and encouragement,” said Darren Nixon, Young Enterprise NI.
“The success of this event is a testament to the hard work of the coaches and the team members. We look forward to building on this success in the future and further developing relationships between the school and community.
