THE latest IFA Nutty Krust Summer Soccer School took place in Lurgan Park recently organised by Keith Gibson, IFA Grassroots Development Officer for Craigavon.
Over 100 boys and girls came along and despite the awful weather conditions turned up every day to enjoy the fun, learn new skills and make new friends.
Come wind or high water the coaches were determined that all the players would have a fun week. The high water certainly came. When we arrived to setup on Tuesday morning the previous nights thunderstorms had left three feet of water on the pitch we were supposed to be playing on. This is not what the coaching team expected to see but it was all hands to the pump (not literally, we left that to the Parks department) to make sure we didn't have to turn away any budding footballers.
"I would like to thank several people who enabled us to continue on, despite the pitches being submerged,” said Keith, “Leeann (Lurgan Park Manager) for use of the tennis pavilion for the P1 and P2 group and all her help during the week, Mervyn (Waves centre) for use of the hall there and Lurgan Town Football Club, particularly Gareth Maxwell for opening up the all weather pitches at Gordon Playing Fields for us. Without the help of all these people we could not have kept the camp running and the kids would have been disappointed."
Keith added: “So a 'fun' week in Lurgan park but a big thank you to the coaching staff whose session plans had to change sometimes several times in the day.
“Hopefully we will be back in Lurgan Park next year but with the sun shining on us!!”
