FOOTBALL: SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES

30/06/2008

IF you’ve always thought of football as a male preserve, this summer will make you change your mind!

The sixth Carrickfergus Ladies Football Festival will bring together a spectacular array of talent in the sport that has long been seen as a male sport. From Thursday 17 July to Saturday 19 July, four matches will be played each night (Thursday and Friday) with the first match starting at 6.30pm.

Matches are always competitive with all teams vying to win the championship cup but the festival is more than the cup competition. With Junior Under 15 and Under 13 competitions - featuring two teams from Manchester - , a coaching clinic, a family fun day on Saturday 19 July and a new five-a-side Senior Competition, there really is something for everyone this year.

Looking forward to the tournament, Chair of the Arts and Events Sub Committee at Carrickfergus Council (and long time football fan) Alderman David Hilditch, said: “From world class coaching to world class performances on the field, this is an event which has it all.  We are delighted to see the new five a side competition as part of the programme this year and it is great to see many of the junior players from previous years now competing in senior teams at such a high standard.

"I’m also delighted that Carrickfergus is the home of a tournament which not only opens up soccer to women, but which also makes the sport more accessible to the entire community.  It is natural that sporting attention will focus on the top quality ladies’ matches, but the festival programme also creates new opportunities for children, young people and community teams. “

To register for the  five-a-side Senior or Junior competitions, forms are available from Christine Barnhill on 07976 785079 or at barnhillc@carrickfergus.org Cost is £15 per team.
