The Irish Football Association’s support of the Charity
The support of organisations such as the Irish Football Association ensures The Anthony Nolan Trust is able to save the lives of youngsters such as local child Georgia Cocking.
Georgia Cocking was diagnosed in October 2006 with chronic myeloid leukaemia. A bone marrow transplant was her only hope. None of her family were a match, but the Anthony Nolan Trust found a match and she had a transplant in April 2007. The leukaemia is now in remission.
Debbie Cocking on her daughter Georgia Cocking, 4,Lisburn, Northern Ireland:
“The feeling when they said they had a match was out of this world – we knew it was Georgia’s best chance for survival. How people feel when they don’t find a donor… I can’t imagine – it must be devastating.
I don’t know what I’d say if I met her donor – I don’t think I’d be able to say anything, I’d just put my arms around him. Georgiacalls him Mr America– she thinks he lives in Disneyland. I have written to him so hopefully he knows what a life changing thing he’s done for Georgia and our whole family.
You take your children for granted until you nearly lose them. I think bone marrow donation should be compulsory – you’re not losing anything, but someone’s gaining a life.
