NORTHERN Ireland midfielder Chris Brunt was the toast of the Midlands last night after his 84th minute goal effectively sealed West Bromwich Albion’s promotion back to the Premier League.
The Baggies were a goal down to Southampton with just six minutes remaining when substitute Brunt drilled home the crucial equaliser to earn his side a point.
Although Hull City can still draw level on points with Tony Mowbray’s outfit, West Brom’s vastly superior goal difference means they are set to return to the top flight barring a mathematical miracle next weekend.
“We deserve it,” admitted Brunt. “We have worked very hard for it all season everybody who played week in week out and those who just played a few games and all the staff at the club, we have put everything into getting promoted I’m glad we have made it.”
Brunt’s team-mate Carl Hoefkens was fulsome in his praise for the way the 23-year-old from Belfast took his goal, which according to some experts could be worth around £50 million to the club.
Said Hoefkens: “The ball fell to Brunty and if there is anyone you want it to fall to outside the box, it is him.”
“Before the game I was looking at Brunty in the dressing room and he was disappointed he wasn’t starting, but then he came on and changed the game.
“He’s a hero now and he totally deserves it.”
