FIFA whistler Mark Courtney will take charge of the JJB Sports Irish Cup Final between Dungannon Swifts and Linfield after injury forced Davy Malcolm to relinquish the responsibility.

Bangor official Malcolm was taking part in a training session with other referees when he damaged his hip flexor and despite extensive treatment from Bodytone Physiotherapy, Big Davy had no option but to withdraw his services.

He told irishfa.com: “In consultation with Tony Barnett, we don't believe the problem would have cleared sufficiently before Saturday and I would be doing a disservice to colleagues if I try to go into the game with this injury. As such it is probably best that I withdraw sooner rather than later to allow my replacement time to prepare with his team ahead of Saturday”.

Malcolm continued: “As far as I am concerned, despite savouring two Irish Cup Finals already, I’m naturally disappointed, but on a personal level and at the same time, I’m pleased for my colleagues and good friend Mark who is an experienced official and won’t let anyone down.  It’s his day now and I wish him and the rest of the team all the best for the game.

“I’d like to thank all those friends and colleagues who have contacted me to offer their support and their best wishes over the last 24 hours thathas helped cushion the blow somewhat.”

Cookstown based Courtney was appointed as 4th official for the showpiece, but is now promoted to officiate in his first ever Irish Cup Final.  “It’s mixed emotions for me,” said Mark, “I feel for Davy and rang him to see if I could help in any way, then it sunk in that I’ll be refereeing the final.

"I’ve come up through the ranks and been in the middle for Intermediate finals and the Setanta Final two years ago, but this is my greatest honour, it the pinnacle of any official’s career to get the Domestic Cup Final, and although not ideal in the way the appointment happened, I’m certainly going to take the opportunity and enjoy the day.”

IFA Referee Development Officer Alan Snoddy said: “My best wishes go to Davy Malcolm, I know the circumstances are not as Mark would have liked, but he is more than capable of taking the appointment at short notice and I wish him all the best for the big day.”

Bangor will still be represented at the final as Adrian McCourt will be the fourth official; Assistant Referees are Eamonn Shanks and Gerry Flynn.
