QUINN FINDS HIS SHOOTING BOOTS

20/02/2006
By Martin Harris

JAMES Quinn fired a timely reminder to Lawrie Sanchez ahead of the Estonia friendly with his first goal in a month for Peterborough United.

After a number of near misses during the week the big frontman went one better for The Posh after 59 minutes of their weekend defeat of Notts County when he reacted quickest to turn home the rebound from a blocked Peter Gain effort.

Staying in League Two, Jeff Hughes continued his recent run of form with his second goal in as many weeks for Lincoln City as the Imps shared two goals with Macclesfield Town on Saturday.

The Larne born left-back struck on 75 minutes with a firm downward header at the far post from a Francis Green cross to keep the club in the hunt for a play-off slot.

And Stephen Craigan narrowly failed to make it a hat-trick of Northern Ireland scorers when his back post header for Motherwell struck the woodwork ..... not that it would have done much to prevent The Steelmen crashing to a 3-0 defeat to Hearts while an Andy Kirk effort was cleared off the line only as far as Ian Taylor who promptly returned it for Northampton Town's winner against Torquay United.

Steve Davis and Tony Capaldi both played their part for Aston Villa and Plymouth Argyle respectively. Davis set up Milan Baros to fire Villa into the lead in their FA Cup tie with Manchester City while Capaldi created the opening for Vincent Pericard to grab his third goal of the 3-1 defeat of Coventry City.

At the other end of the pitch Aidan Davison performed well in front of TV cameras with saves from Joe Cole and Herman Crespo as his Colchester United side went down 3-1 to Chelsea in the cup albeit to two late goals from the Premiership champions elect.

Elsewhere, there were returns for Damien Johnson and David Healy from suspension while U21 midfielder Daryl Smylie made his Stockport County debut in the 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers.
