IT'S back to The Showgrounds on Wednesday for the next instalment .....

Nationwide Irish Cup

GIANTKILLERS Bangor await the winners of this Nationwide Irish Cup tie between Lisburn Distillery and Ballymena United after neither side managed to find the net at New Grosvenor Stadium.

After a quiet opening it was the visitors who created the first effort of note on 18 minutes when, from a Ciaran Donaghy throw-in, Gary Haveron flicked a header onto the bar with Whites custodian Philip Matthews beaten.

A couple of minutes later at the other end Darren Armour played Francis Murphy clear to go on a run which eventually ended with a strong shot from 25 yards going narrowly over.

On 29 minutes another Haveron header threatened to hand United the advantage only this time for the ball to sweep just past an upright.

Then, three minutes after that, a Stuart King effort from just inside the area was pushed past the post by Matthews.

The last real chance of the half came on 36 minutes when a Michael Ferguson cross was knocked on by Murphy with keeper William McFrederick equal to the challenge with a superb tip over the bar.

The second half was an altogether quieter affair.

On 62 minutes Armour got on the end of a McLaughlin ball and burst through the defence before unleashing a rasping effort which McFrederick did well to parry.

United’s first chance of the second period didn’t arrive until 12 minutes from time when King really should have made more of the opportunity laid on by substitute Rory Hamill.

With time running out the Whites seemed the more keen to avoid the replay.

Murphy coming close on 82 minutes with a low effort along the bumpy pitch while Catney similarly tested McFrederick three minutes from time.

Then, a minute into stoppage time, Murphy might have nicked it when he pounced on a scuffed Donaghy clearance only to fire over with the goal at his mercy.

The replay takes place at Ballymena on Wednesday night, kick-off 7:45m.
