WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL

Release Date: 30/07/2010

Author: By Roisin McFeely

CRUSADERS Newtownabbey Strikers are delighted to announce their bid to host the UEFA Women’s Champions League (Group 7) Mini-Tournament has been successful.

The tournament will now take place from 5-10 August and will involve six matches across three UEFA approved venues.

As the first women’s club in the entire island of Ireland to host such a prestigious event the Strikers will indeed be making history.  The club’s foresight has paid dividends for all supporters of the women’s game because the 2008/09 Women’s Champions League winners FCR 2001 Duisburg have been drawn in the same group along with current Scottish pace setters Glasgow City LFC and five time winners of the Slovak women’s liga žien or top women’s league, Sk Slovan Bratislava.

Duisburg feature numerous internationals (all full-time professionals), notably UEFA top scorer Inka Grings. Glasgow City’s intentions to match the Germans are clear from their pre-tournament plans, which include a scouting trip to watch the Strikers in action and an inspection of the tournament training grounds.

In order to deliver a tournament that matches the very high standard of play which we will undoubtedly see on the field, Strikers have been joined by partners North Belfast Play Forum whose groundbreaking work on sport and communities is cited throughout the UK.

To help promote the tournament the Strikers have established a dedicated tournament Facebook Page with fan numbers (local and international) growing on a daily basis (search under Crusaders Strikers Mini Tournament Hosts).  Tournament ambassador and Northern Irish favourite, Kate Hoey MP, has pledged her support while the Local Organising Committee is joined by tournament sponsors, Chambers Transport, who are offering a guided Causeway tour for the teams as part of their tournament package.
