NORTHERN IRELAND 1-1 MEXICO

Release Date: 26/07/2010

NORTHERN Ireland came within ten minutes of kicking off their Milk Cup Elite defence with a win over Mexico at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

Steve Beaglehole’s side – looking to complete a hat-trick of victories – moved in front with fifteen minutes remaining through Watford defender Adam Thompson who back-heeled the ball into the net after meeting a low Liam Bagnall cross from the line.

However, Mexico levelled just six minutes later after Bagnall upended Victor Manon inside the box to concede a penalty which Martin Galvan clincally dispatched past Wayne Drummond high into the top corner.

Elsewhere in the Elite Section Denmark thumped Japan 4-1 in Ballymena while USA recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over China.

Northern Ireland are next in action on Wednesday night when they take on China in Ballymoney knowing that nothing less than all three points will keep their hopes of making Friday’s decider alive.

Also on Wednesday group leaders Denmark and USA meet in Coleraine while Mexico and Japan go head-to-head in Ballymena.

Northern Ireland: Drummond, Thompson (Hill 88), Jarvis, McLaughlin, Hegarty, Gorman (McCrudden 90), Breeze, Grigg (Dougan 66), Gray, Ferguson (Davidson 82), Bagnall subs Hill (replaced Thompson 88), McCrudden (replaced Gorman 90), Dougan (replaced Grigg 66), Davidson (replaced Ferguson 82), Dickey (not used), Burns (not used), Devine (not used)
