Release Date: 08/07/2011
NEXT week up to 600 local young people will converge in North Belfast – not at one of the interface areas but at Solitude, home of Cliftonville FC, to take part in the 6th Annual George Best Street League.
Due to the success of the George Best Street League over the last five years, this year the festival will move to a new bigger venue-Solitude, home of Cliftonville FC, where up to 600 young people from age 12 will get a chance to play on a professional floodlit pitch. The event is coordinated by Ardoyne Youth Provision Forum and is proudly supported by the EU funded Community Relations department of the Irish Football Association, Unite Against hate, Belfast City Council, Cliftonville FC and George Best Foundation.
The football festival, which will run from 11–14 July, from 6pm to 10pm each evening and will include 7-a-side teams from the local areas from age 12 to 18+.
Shane Whelehan, Director of Ardoyne Youth Providers Forum said: “Like previous years this event will promote a positive alternative to young people who may otherwise engage or spectate at interface areas by providing a professional, high quality football festival in a magnificent venue, in front of friends and family. This event would not have been possible without the support of the IFA.”
IFA Chief Executive, Patrick Nelson added: “With support from EU Peace III, Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council we are delighted to be a major sponsor of this community driven good relations initiative. This event highlights how clubs can become community hubs and contribute to a healthier and more peaceful society.”
