THE 2012 Belfast City Council Senior Women’s Futsal Cup at the Shankill Leisure Centre proved to be a very successful event.
In the first round which was held at the Shankill Leisure Centre on Friday 13 January saw Glentoran Belfast United, Chimney Corner, Linfield Ladies and Blackieville qualify for the finals which were held on Friday 27 January.
The semi- finals saw a great match between Blackieville and Glentoran Belfast United, however Glentoran Belfast United were the stronger team winning 14–2 respectively. The second semi-final was closely contested between Linfield and Chimney Corner with Linfield making the cut winning 3-0.
The third and fourth place play-off match between Chimney Corner and Blackieville looked to be over as Chimney Corner lead by three goals, however Blackieville came back to win the game 5-3 to claim the 3rd place position.
The final saw a great match between Linfield Ladies and Glentoran Belfast United. The game was dominated by Glentoran Belfast United with a very experienced team showing their skills; however Linfield Ladies fought hard and managed to score three goals but Glentoran Belfast United won easily – final score: 12-3.
Medals and trophies were presented by Belfast City Councillor Steven Corr, who is also Chairman of the Committee for the Parks and Leisure Department in Belfast City Council. Councillor Corr spoke about how young women were identified as one of the most underrepresented groups in sport and that it was great to see tournaments being run to address this.
