UNDER 23s LOSE IN LISBON

Release Date: 12/10/2010

NORTHERN Ireland U23s put up an assured performance in their latest International Challenge Trophy outing in Portugal before succumbing to two goals in the last half-an-hour.

PORTUGAL U23 2-0 NORTHERN IRELAND U23

Although largely restricted to counter-attacks and set pieces Ronnie McFall’s side almost opened the scoring on the hour mark when Michael Carvill bore down on goal only for the ball to be cleared for a corner.

Unfortunately the hosts – boasting players from Porto and Sporting Lisbon amongst others – opened the scoring a short time later through Orlando Sá who beat Chris Keenan in off an upright.

Then, 11 minutes later, Castro thumped the ball home from 30 yards to seal victory and a place in the semi-finals early next year.

Northern Ireland: Chris Keenan, Billy Joe Burns, Aaron Stewart, Chris Ramsey, Ross Redman, Philip Lowry, Robert Garrett, Jamie Mulgrew, Martin Donnelly, Jordan Owens, Stuart Dallas subs Sean O’Neill (not used), Jay Magee (replaced Burns 84), Darren Boyce (replaced Mulgrew 60), Michael Carvill (replaced Donnelly 60), Johnny Taylor (not used)
