IN the second meeting in three days, the Northern Ireland U19 Women were unlucky to lose 2-1 against their Scottish counterparts in an international friendly.
Northern Ireland got off to a good start, constantly threatening the Scotland defence but with no goal to show for their superb efforts. Against the run of play Scotland made a break and scored, but the equaliser came quickly from the reactions of Simone Magill who seized upon a parried save from the Scotland goalkeeper.
In the second half Northern Ireland remained strong and were unfortunate to be hit by a late goal – with Scotland getting the winner three minutes from full-time.
In the first game against Scotland on Tuesday night at Ballymoney, Northern Ireland drew 1-1.
“These two games show just how far we’ve progressed in women’s football in Northern Ireland,” said National Women’s Coach, Alfie Wylie. “There has been a massive improvement in the quality of players coming through the ranks and this is down to the coaches - at club to excellence centre level - who put in so much of their time and hard work to train these girls to the highest standard possible.”
Women’s football in Northern Ireland continues to go from strength to strength and Alfie is calling on more supporters to come along and cheer on our international sides. Next in action will be the Northern Ireland senior women’s squad – the side will take on France in the second of a World Cup qualifier double header on March 31 at Windsor Park, kick-off 7.45pm.
So make sure you come along and cheer on the Northern Ireland girls in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
